English commentary: In determing the role of religion in politics, we find in Spinoza "an interesting tension": On the one hand he tries to strengthen a "universal religion" stressing the common features of all religions. On the other hand, Spinoza wants to strenghten religious liberty. "In the TP, the final statement in Spinoza's philosophy, we see him struggling to follow both paths." (p. 143-144)
