English commentary: "Spinoza sometimes speaks of “justified anger,” which seems to be a contradiction in terms, for how could this sad emotion take on more than the mere appearance of justice? If, however, reason demands that we abide by even “the most absurd” orders from the sovereign, this very absurdity triggers the anger of the most honest citizens and threatens sovereignty itself."
