German commentary Zusammenfassung: The purpose of this article is to construct productive bridges between Spinoza’s philosophy and some aspects of contemporary systems theory, with special attention to social systems theory. In order to do so, I first explore the distinction between substance and modes, showing the relative character of modal configurations as parts or wholes. The spinozist notion of individual is then interpreted as an open system in dynamic equilibrium, and the concept of autopoiesis is compared with that of conatus. In the final sections, imagination is presented as the basis of
sociability, and the role of epistemic and communicative processes is emphasised in the delineation of social systems.
