Bostrenghi, Daniela:
Le ragioni della tolleranza in Spinoza

In: Isonomia : Online philosophical Journal of the University of Urbino "Carlo Bo"2018:

Literature type: Internet Resource
Language: Italian
Thematic areas: Epistemology / methodology / philosophy of mind, Anthropology / psychology / doctrine of affections / body and mind, Ethics, Philosophy of politics and law, Comparison of theories

English commentary: "Once beyond the traditional meaning of the term (which appears in only one place in his whole work), the Spinozian ideal of tolerantia refers to a full form of recognition that overcomes, subverts, reverses the point of view of the resigned «endurance» of error, though it is understood as a «deprivation of knowledge» and not as a sign of negative connotation in itself. In contrast to prejudice, ignorance and superstition which, both then and now, create illusory security boundaries and nurture sad feelings of resentment and hate, affections capable of contributing to Spinoza’s ethical-political project will then be joyful ones of generositas and animi fortitudo (an effective antidote to every form of imperium violentum), rather than the «constancy» of free men enduring the constriction of libertas philosophandi" (abstract).
